Phase One

FUTURE for Students in Grade 6

Lunch in Residence Hall

The first phase of Project FUTURE is designed to encourage students to start thinking about and planning to go to college.  Sixth grade students are recruited from Title One schools in Lubbock and surrounding counties through an open application process.  The process includes the written application, an essay on “Why I want to be a Teacher”, a letter of recommendation from a classmate, and a parent signature.  Participating schools submit the applications of selected applicants to the College of Education by December 1.

The selected students attend an all day conference held at Texas Tech University and return for a reunion conference each year until they graduate from high school.

Parents are invited to participate in the program and to attend conferences with their child.  Conferences include tours and lunch in residence halls.

Sixth graders for the 2006-2007 school year will honored at an Induction Ceremony on December 18, to be held at Texas Tech University in the Student Union Building located at 15th & Akron at 6:30 p.m. in the Red Raider Ballroom. In addition to their families and friends, guests invited to attend the event include campus administrators, administrators from all the participating school districts, and College of Education faculty.

The Sixth Grade Conference will take place on January 19, 2007 at the International Cultural Center on the Texas Tech campus off 6th and Indiana beginning at 9:00 a.m. –  2:00 p.m.  Students will be exploring teaching careers in science through fun and interactive activities.  They will also be given the opportunity to apply for a one week science day camp to be offered at no charge to FUTURE students in the summer 2007.  Funding from the Greater Texas Foundation will cover the costs for FUTURE students.
