Phase Three

FUTURE for grades 10, 11, and 12

Education Summit

Phase Three will place the students in more direct contact with individuals  that will help them successfully prepare for college. The conferences for all three of these grades are held in the fall.

The theme for the tenth grade conference is “The College Experience.”  The conference places participating students in the classroom side by side with college students.  FUTURE students will attend education, biology, mathematics, psychology, sociology, history, political science classes, etc.  College students that serve as guides/mentors take the students to the classes and stay with them until they return to the College of Education for a debriefing session about their experiences.  By placing the students in the classroom, they gain insights about college life that cannot be surpassed.  FUTURE students also learn about teaching styles employed by college instructors.  The students are assigned the classes that they will attend because in the “real world”, the students do not get to “choose” their classes until the third year.  This conference is designed to simulate the college experience as closely as possible.

Participants in the eleventh grade FUTURE program have attended the annual Education Summit held at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center the past two years.  The summit draws presenters and participants from throughout the state.  The summit allows FUTURE students to attend educational sessions to help them prepare for college.  Sessions include presentations on how to pay for college, student involvement at college, how to be money smart, success strategies, writing winning essays for scholarships, college board test preparation, motivational speakers, and a college fair.  The cost to attend the summit for students, educators that accompany the FUTURE students, and parents is covered by the College of Education through a grant provided by the Greater Texas Foundation.  The Closing the Gaps Education Summit will be held on November 1, 2006.

The 12th Grade Academic Conference for 2006 will be held in the College of Education Building in Room 001 on September 22.  The students will have an opportunity to visit with college representatives about financial aid, admissions, scholarships, and campus life.  They will register on-line to attend the fall Texas Tech University Day event on October 9th at the United Spirit Arera when they attend their conference on September 22.  At the University Day event, FUTURE students may attend special sessions in addition to the seminars presented by campus personnel from financial aid, admissions, and student services.  A typical itinerary for University Day is below.  Students must pre-register for University Day and are contacted by FUTURE coordinators to insure all paperwork is processed.  Lunch for students and parents is provided by FUTURE.
